Winter Break Camp: Modern Artists
Featuring Pacita Abad, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Yayoi Kusama, and El Anatsui
Discover this winter break for an exciting art adventure inspired by some of today’s most iconic contemporary artists! During this week-long camp, kids will explore the vibrant world of Yayoi Kusama’s whimsical dots and infinity rooms, dive into the expressive energy of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s graffiti-style art, tell powerful stories through Kara Walker’s stunning silhouettes, and create dazzling sculptures using recycled materials like El Anatsui.
Through hands-on projects, young artists will experiment with painting, sculpture, mixed media, and storytelling. Each day will focus on one of these inspiring artists, blending creativity with play, and giving campers the opportunity to make their own unique masterpieces. With a variety of engaging activities, this camp encourages exploration, imagination, and self-expression.
- Daily Themes: Each day of camp will focus on one contemporary artist, allowing kids to immerse themselves in the unique styles and cultural influences of these trailblazing figures. Through guided exploration, kids will learn about the lives and works of these artists and how they transformed everyday materials into incredible masterpieces
- Creative Techniques: Throughout the camp, kids will experiment with a variety of art-making techniques, including painting, collage, mixed-media, and sculpture. Inspired by Pacita Abad’s layered textures, they’ll create vibrant patterned works, while Basquiat’s influence will guide them in using expressive lines and symbols. Kusama’s signature dots will lead to playful pattern-making, and El Anatsui’s work will inspire kids to create sculptures from found and recycled objects.
- Skill Development: In this camp, children will enhance key artistic skills, including fine motor control, spatial awareness, and problem-solving. They’ll practice color mixing, brushwork, and composition.
- Fun & Play: Group activities and games will encourage collaboration, self-expression, and the freedom to experiment in a fun, supportive environment. This playful approach to art will boost creativity and confidence, while keeping the camp lively and engaging.
- Art Projects may include: creating mini coloring books inspired by this week's artists, acrylic painting, mosaic crown making, hanging mobile and more!
